Preparations For Failure
by JD Nutt, IG Web-Editor
Report last updated on Dec. 19th, 2011 - Oklahoma City, OK.
At the minimum, failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
Hearts fail, students fail tests, and governments fail. These are facts that have been written into history. The old adage of "Not knowing history, you'll be doomed to repeat it" applies here.
Surely you have heard this advice before. Maybe a radio advertisement or a TV commercial. As chicken little said. "The sky is falling, the sky is falling". Be advised: It is time to prepare!
However, none the less... we have a very simple and short list of things to do to insure you are prepared, in the event failure of our system as we know it today does fail.
Stage One...
  • Cash is King -  Join a local credit union and keep cash on hand. You may even revert back to paying cash for your monthly expenses. Old habits are hard to break, and the debit card in your wallet has simplified life. However, it can also be your demise.
  • We Gotta Eat -   If you want your family in a panic when you're incapable of feeding your clan imagine this. Tell your family you have no food or water until the streets are clear or the grid gets restored. Devastating! So make a trip to the grocery store now. Buy what your budget will allow. If it's for four days or four weeks supply of food, some is better than none. Think canned goods and water. Tell everybody not to touch the back-up food and they'll respect you for making preparations.
  • Heat -  The human body can tolerate extreme heat. It cannot cope with constant freezing temperatures. Insure you have a stock of blankets or sleeping bags. A cord of firewood is also a must to keep stockpiled. Even if you have no fireplace to burn the wood, you can always dig a hole outside to keep a fire going for hot meals and body warmth before going to bed.
  • Fuel -  Keep five to ten gallons in reserve at a minimum. If you don't use it during a winter storm outage, you'll need it in the spring for your lawn mower or other purposes. Ten gallons of fuel can take you one hundred miles or more down the road if you have to abandon your home.
  • Protection - Their will be people that are not prepared and they will want what you have. Just the sight of firearms and ammo will be a deterrent to protect your property. If you hate guns, buy a couple of baseball bats to "swing away" if needed. Join forces with your neighbors. Their is always strength in numbers.
It's that simple. Food, clothing, shelter and a little bit more will get you thru the coming troubled times. It may be climate related, or an electromagnetic pulse. This small preparation list will surprise you on the comfort scale when you find yourself in need.
Now let's take it up a notch...
In the event of some form of national catastrophe, you'll want to be ready to go "Rambo".
Stage Two...
  • City Dwellers - Get out of town. Go to Grandma's house in the country. Perhaps you have a good friend that is a country boy. Go to his location immediately with all of your supplies. In the event of chaos, the city is the last place you want to be. Bringing your supplies with you makes you an asset, not a hindrance.
  • Protection - With the threat of losing what you have in the event of some foolish act by a criminal element aka; terrorist group or even worse, you are going to need to be able to protect yourself and your clan. If you have no military experience, may I suggest shotguns. They hurt, they are loud and they will inflict much damage on your opponent. Every adult in your group should be equipped with a standard twelve gauge pump shotgun. Ammo is preferably double odd buck-shot. If you do not wish to kill your opponent, use the skip method. This is when you fire three foot in front of the bad guy's feet, with a round of OO-Buck. The projectiles will traverse upward at knee high level to disable the threat in front of you.
  • Rally Point -  If you are over run, you and yours must have a predefined location that you will rally to and join back up as a unit. Maybe it's the neighbor's house or one hundred yards down the road. Unity is important.
  • Communications -  Field radios or even CB's come in handy at this point of aggression. If the world has gone crazy, cell phones will be useless. Consider creating an authentication code or a password so as not to be duped by your aggressor when using common communication equipment.
  • Medical -  Purchase a well stocked first aid kit. In the event you are shot, make sure you have tampons available. In order to stop the bleeding, insert a tampon into the bullet wound. Remember; stop the bleeding, check for an exit wound, and protect the wound with dressings.
  • Again, Cash Is King -  In the event you need influence with another group or force, having a stash of cash will allow you to buy your safety. In addition, scavenging can be much easier if you offer cash for an item that you are in need of.
  • Survival Kit - And last but not least, buy a quality survival kit. I repeat, a quality survival kit. Don't go cheap on this item. This kit will determine your immediate future.
If the world comes apart as you know it, you can only depend on yourself and your preparations. Can't say I didn't warn you.  -Good Luck-
